McKinley Elementary School gets new playground

When the students of McKinley Elementary School imagined their ideal playground early this year, the TV show "American Ninja Warrior" came to mind.

That vision became a reality this year when the school swapped a tall slide and limited equipment for two separate obstacle course that mimic the show, which features action-packed challenges for athletes. The school hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday with students and district officials to officially open the new playground.

Preliminary ratings show Cañon City School District remains accredited

The Cañon City School District remains accredited by the state of Colorado, according to preliminary ratings released by the Colorado Board of Education.

The accreditation status and ratings are based on how well students perform on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers and other state-created tests, such as the SAT. The tests are used to measure two major components: student achievement and student growth.

GATE program has 306 students enrolled this year
The Cañon City School District has 306 students enrolled in its gifted and talented program this year, making up about 9 percent of the student population.

Shyla Christiansen, the district's gifted and talented coordinator, presented information about the program Monday to the Cañon City School Board.

RE-1 School District and Canon City Police Practice for Emergencies

For several weeks the Canon City Police Department and the Canon City RE-1 School District have been in the planning stages of a functional exercise, designed to test the School District’s Emergency Operations Plan. The plan, which includes response protocols to weather events all the way up to an active shooter incident, is required for all school districts to have in place. The school district’s plan was revised last year and is now ready to be put to the test in a controlled environment.
