Welcome to Gifted & Talented Education!
The GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program for Cañon City Schools provides programs and programming for identified GATE students. Programs at the high school level include: Honors classes, Advanced Placement classes, Advanced level subject classes, and/or ability grouping. The Advanced Placement classes for 2007-08 include Art History, Biology, English Language, Psychology, Spanish Language, and United States History. The middle school and elementary levels provide a GATE class for the identified students.
There are many extended activities for GATE students. The high school offers various National Math contests, Knowledge Bowl, and technology club. For the 2007-08 school year the GATE students will tour various colleges for career planning.
Destination Imagination, MathCounts, Knowledge Bowl, Geography Bee, and the Spelling Bee are targeted for the middle school level. At the elementary level, after school classes are targeted for the Arts.
The GATE Program also directs the District Science Fair for grades 6 – 12 in the fall, and the Southern Colorado Regional Science Fair in March. Sixteen students from Cañon City Middle School and Cañon City High School advanced to the state level and placed at the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair.
Another notable event directed by the GATE Coordinator is the SPLASH (Summer Program Learning for Advanced Students) Program held in June.
