The 2012-2013 school year is one of many changes throughout Canon City Schools, and that includes the GATE Department. Beth Gaffney, our Coordinator for many years, is now full-time Principal at Canon Exploratory School, which meant she had to leave GATE. We miss her very much, but are excited about the new school year. We restructured our service provision model so that now the providers are working with either elementary, middle school, or high school solely.
That said, I am serving CCHS, Mrs. Macklin switched to middle school GATE teaching, and Mrs. Swisher stayed in elementary. We are pleased to have brought Mrs. Lacey LeDoux onto our team, and she too is an elementary provider.
Our curriculum rotation has also been altered slightly in that we are now working primarily in the following areas during pull-out instruction: critical thinking, creative problem solving, social/emotional development of the gifted learner, and leadership. We also continue to work with classroom teachers to provide for differentiation needs in the general classroom setting.
Additionally, we recently submitted our 2012-2016 Program Plan to the Colorado Department of Education and look forward to working toward our new targets for growth. We look forward to a big and exciting school year and hope to work even more closely with parents as we work toward best meeting the needs of students in the GATE program.
Sincerely, Adam Hartman
