The Cañon City Schools Nutritional Services Program was recently awarded it’s 2nd Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant for Skyline Elementary School. The United States Department of Agriculture awarded Skyline Elementary $11,000 to provide all children at Skyline a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day. These fruits and vegetables will be offered at no charge to the students through out the school day and the program will provide an effective and creative way of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options for students. The goals of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) include: creating a healthier school environment, expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables students are exposed to, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption among students and hopefully making a difference in student’s diets that will impact their present and future health.
Cañon City Schools is proud to be involved in a program that is seen as an important catalyst for change in the efforts to combat childhood obesity. We are excited to have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these students as we move forward with our efforts to create a school environment that promotes healthy schools by supporting student wellness and good nutrition as part of the total learning environment.
This program, which began in November 2008 and will run until to June 2009, encourages community partnerships to support the school when they offer the free fruits and vegetables. Buser has partnered with Colon Orchards and City Market to provide produce for the children and would like to invite any other individual, business or community organization that may be interested in becoming involved to contact her at 276-5813.
