Cañon City High School student teaches about disability awareness

Kaitlyn Melster presents project through Tiger Open Pathways

For Kaitlyn Melster, growing up with a brother who has a disability has been tough,

"When I was little, I used to look at my brother and think, why is he so different? Why can't I have a normal brother?" Kaitlyn, 16, said. "But as I got older, I started to realize that it was better to have a brother like him. He's taught me a lot."

The Cañon City School District has canceled classes at all of its schools on Friday, April 27, 2018, as a result of an inability to provide substitute coverage for staff who have requested leave for personal reasons, or in conjunction with a gathering to be held in Denver in support of increased education funding in Colorado.

Cañon City school district hosts school safety meeting

CAÑON CITY, Colo. - Following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, two months ago, local school leaders are taking a closer look at safety.

The Cañon City School District hosted a community meeting about school safety on Monday.

"The kids are our greatest asset and the teachers that teach them," Renne DuPont, a local who attended the meeting, said.

Canon Exploratory Studesnt

Kade Saffold, a first grader at Canon Exploratory School, did his quarterly project on Tezak Heavy Equipment, a local business.He wanted to learn more about how the company works, the different kinds of jobs you can do there, and how they blow up the rock.

Kade organized a field trip for his class to go to learn about how the company does mitigation work while preserving the natural animal habitat.

The class was given a guided tour through the quarry to see first hand how the rock is moved and sorted for different purposes. They also learned how they blast the rock and how the rock from the quarry is used in many different ways. It was a ROCKIN' field trip!
