At the Cañon City School District our vision is Learning for life!

We believe a child’s educational experiences must be relevant to their future.  We strive for this by attracting the most amazing people in education, and offering parents a choice in education models.  Whatever the delivery method, our people operate from the core belief that with our support every child is capable learning, growing, and realizing their potential.  To realize this vision, we are focused on four improvement initiatives.

Pueblo Community College's Gateway to College program a second chance for high schoolers

It's a second chance for high school students who have fallen behind in their studies.

Pueblo Community College's Gateway to College program, offered at the Fremont Campus, is a way for students who struggle to take college classes to earn their high school diplomas. The program, which kicks off a new semester Jan. 15, is enrolling students.

Katrina Mann, a Gateway to College resource specialist, said students who enroll in the program are between ages 17 and 20 and have a tough time completing the coursework offered at their traditional high schools. While some of the students might have already dropped out of high school, she said, many of them just need a different environment to work in to earn their diplomas.

Artists' Gallery displays artwork of Cañon City School District through December

When students stepped into the Artists' Gallery last year for the organization's inaugural student art show, Sammy Burman noticed that many of them seemed apprehensive.

"Many children had never been in an art gallery before," said Burman, the gallery's owner.

She noticed a "fear that not only the children had, but the parents, of the stuffy gallery," she said.

But "once they come in, they see that it's a nice, friendly atmosphere, and it's not scary," Burman said. "All of a sudden, they're just relaxed and having fun and pointing."
