Dear Parents and Guardians
Cañon City Schools is planning for the physical re-opening of facilities this fall, in whatever manner is allowed by public health. Though there are many details to work out, our plan is as follows:
Plan A: We’ll conduct school as normal for all students every day, with very few limits to attendance, though possibly with precautions in place such as monitoring health conditions each day and requiring personal protective equipment for at-risk populations if ordered to do so.
Plan B: We’ll operate a hybrid attendance schedule to meet gathering limitation requirements, accomplish social distancing or strict cohorting of populations, and perhaps even requiring personal protective equipment for at-risk populations. This could mean holding school in shifts, in a manner in which not all children will be able to come to campus each day or all day. This could mean students in grades K-5 may only get to attend school 3 hours per day, each day, in shifts (morning or afternoon), and students in grades 6-12 may only get to attend school on a rotating basis every other day while keeping up with their school work digitally when not allowed in the building. Please note Cañon City Schools is committed to providing whatever transportation is needed for students to make this plan work.
Plan C: Some classrooms or entire buildings will be closed for periods of time as they were during the 4th quarter, and instruction will be delivered to all students through digital means.
Though school is still a month and a half away and we recognize many things may change, we believe it will be necessary to deeply support students, families, and staff as we return to normal operations, as well as coach children about safe behaviors and procedures. Thus, even if we are ALLOWED to reopen at 100% capacity, we will follow Plan B for the first two weeks of school so we can implement our Transitional Action Plan.
We also recognize some of our families may simply be uncomfortable sending their children back into our buildings when school begins. So in addition to the above options, the Cañon City School District has established a digital-only option for all who chose.
In support of this, the district will provide a personal learning device to each participant and instruction by qualified educators.
Participation in this Cañon City School District operated digital instruction program qualifies children to also participate in school-based extracurricular and enrichment programs such as clubs, sports, and fine arts, to the extent we are able to offer them. Children who participate in a non-Cañon City School District operated digital learning program will not have access to these programs.
Also, if at any time during the school year a family that has chosen this digital option wishes to transition their child back to in-person instruction, they are welcome to do so.
