Principal's Message

December 22, 2021

Hello again, Falcon Families,

We are almost done with the 1st semester of this 2021-2022 school year, and wow, time is flying past us.  I hope you have wonderful plans for the holiday season. Classes will end at 3:25 on Wednesday the 22nd, and we will return to school on January 10th. When we return to school, we will hit the ground running. Girls basketball games will start, students will be changing life skills and AE classes, and we will make some adjustments to other instructional courses to provide support to students.

The first semester has been a very busy and successful one here at CCMS.  Our athletic teams had a very successful fall season, winning two league titles in Cross Country and many individual race titles throughout the year.  Our volleyball team had a great run this year, falling just shy of the championship. The same was true for the football team in the playoffs.  Next was boys basketball; our CCMS Falcons did a fantastic job and brought home another championship with a thrilling win in the finals.  Congratulations to all of our student-athletes on a truly remarkable first half of the year.

Academically this year, we made some minor changes to our scheduling and were able to add multiple courses at each grade level.  These enrichment classes are designed to engage students in something new and different while also allowing our staff the chance to share passions with students.  A few examples are Archaeology, Spanish, Photography, Fly Fishing, Criminology, Graphic Novel design, just to name a few.  Students have enjoyed these new classes, and teachers have enjoyed teaching them.

We continue to look for more ways to expand offerings to students.

As we move into the winter break, please take some time to relax with your children, families, and friends.  Students will return to the school on the 10th of January, and we will welcome them back into the building, rested and ready to grow in the last half of the year.

Thank you for listening again, and Go Falcons!!!!

August 2021

Falcon Families,

Welcome to 2021; I hope you are as excited as we all are to begin a new year. Yes, we are still dealing with a pandemic; however, a new year always brings unique opportunities.  I hope that the holiday season was joyous and restful and that you spent all of the time you wished to spend with your family.

Construction here at CCMS is coming along nicely. The inside of the 1924 building looks very different than it did the last time we occupied it, and I am very excited to introduce all of our students to the new learning space.  We still anticipate moving into the remodeled building around Spring Break, and I will send more communication about this process as we get closer.

Starting on Friday, January 15th, Cañon City Middle School will begin providing Friday help sessions to struggling students who are struggling.  These work sessions will be assigned by individual teachers for students who are falling behind.  Sessions will be held at two different times; early release Fridays will be from 1:30 until 3:30, and on no-school Fridays, the sessions will last from 8:00 am until noon.  If your student is assigned to one of these days, the teacher will contact you on Wednesday before the assigned day. These days are assigned as extra support to help ensure student success in this challenging school year.

Middle School sports are set to begin soon; Mr. Braiden has been working with other athletic directors to develop guidelines. He will send out information as soon as things are finalized.  Boys Basketball will start on January 19th, and students will need to have a physical and all appropriate paperwork completed before that. Please reach out to the school if you have questions.

I want to say thank you to all of the parents as we have reshaped our educational system and delivery methods to work in this school year's parameters.  This year has been a school year like no other, and your continued support of the staff and students of Cañon City Middle School is greatly appreciated.  If you would like to become a part of our PTO organization, please reach out to the school to receive the invitation.

Thank you

Jesse Oliver
