School District Fremont RE-1 - Cañon City Schools

Welcome to the Cañon City School District, where our vision is simple but powerful: Learning for Life!

Everything we do is anchored in this vision and guided by four Core Beliefs:

  • Core Belief #1: We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy before Bloom’s Taxonomy.

  • Core Belief #2: We believe growth is what matters most. Learning requires risk-taking, and the work we do has the greatest impact on student outcomes.

  • Core Belief #3: We are future-focused, committed to developing the traits and skills that prepare students for ever-changing careers.

  • Core Belief #4: We prioritize what is best for students—even when it requires stepping outside our own comfort zones.

As Core Belief #3 reflects, we believe that a child’s educational experience must be relevant to their future. That’s why we focus on attracting exceptional educators and offering families meaningful choices in how their children learn. Regardless of the model, our staff members share a deep belief that—with the right support—every child can grow, learn, and realize their full potential.

In our elementary schools, you’ll find a consistent commitment to building strong foundations in reading, writing, and math. Each school brings its own unique character to this work, but all benefit from strong hiring practices, quality professional development, high-impact curricula, and targeted intervention strategies.

In grades 6–12, our focus shifts toward a career pathways model designed to help students explore college and career options in dynamic, personalized ways. Middle and high school students are encouraged to EXPLORE and INNOVATE as they learn about the world of work and align their learning with their interests. At the high school level, students engage in internships, apprenticeships, and instructional pathways that reflect their personal vision. Every student completes a Capstone project before graduation—an authentic demonstration of their learning journey, built on collaboration, contribution, and real-world readiness.

Across all grade levels, our work goes far beyond content mastery. We are intentional about helping students grow as whole people. That’s why we developed our Portrait of a Graduate, which outlines the 14 essential Traits and Skills we believe every graduate should embody:

KNOWLEDGE, INTEGRITY, TENACITY, AGENCY, AGILITY, CIVILITY, INNOVATION, EMPOWERMENT, LEADERSHIP, CONTRIBUTION, COMMUNICATION, REFLECTION, COLLABORATION, and SOLUTION-SEEKING.

Whatever path our students choose after graduation, these strengths will serve them well.

Thank you for trusting us with your child’s education. We’re honored to partner with you!
