District Update: Water Conservation and Irrigation Practices

Cañon City Schools is fully aware of the current fire risks and heightened water concerns in our community. We want to assure our neighbors that the district is dedicated to doing our part and is actively honoring all voluntary water restrictions across our properties.

You may notice sprinklers running during the day at some of our grounds over the next few weeks. We want to share a few important details about why this is happening:

Establishing New Sod: We have recently laid new sod at select locations. To prevent the new grass from dying, it requires consistent watering during its initial establishment phase.

Using Non-Potable Water: To protect our local drinking water supply, the district is utilizing ditch irrigation water—not the city’s treated domestic water—to irrigate these specific areas.

Once the new root systems are safely established, these watering schedules will be scaled back significantly.

We appreciate the community’s vigilance and shared commitment to conserving our local resources. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to keep our schools safe and well-maintained!
