As our community continues to monitor the nearby wildfire, Canon City Schools is working closely with local emergency management officials, first responders, utility providers, and other community partners to assess conditions and make decisions that prioritize the safety of our students, families, and staff.

Because wildfire conditions can change rapidly, it is important to recognize that evacuation and pre-evacuation orders are often issued by geographic area rather than for the community as a whole. As a result, the impacts on district operations may vary depending on the location of individual schools, facilities, employees, and families.

When making operational decisions, the Cañon City Schools will consider a number of factors, including but not limited to:

• Active evacuation or pre-evacuation orders affecting students, families, or staff.
• Guidance from local emergency management and public safety agencies.
• Road closures, transportation routes, and the ability of students and staff to travel safely.
• Utility interruptions, including power, water, internet, and communication services.
• Air quality and other environmental conditions. We will be using NOAA's official recommendations and readings accordingly.
• The district's ability to operate schools and programs safely and effectively.

Should conditions warrant changes to any district program, activity, or event, we will communicate those decisions as quickly as possible through our normal communication channels, including social media, electronic communication, and the district website.

We understand that these situations can create uncertainty for families, and we appreciate your patience and flexibility as we work to balance continuity of services with the safety and well-being of everyone in our school community.
